Great Science Share for Schools has 3 core values. It is:
inclusive
collaborative
non-competitive
Whilst it is true that the majority of events take place in schools, it is always a joy to see Great Science Shares happening in other settings: zoos, theatres, community centres, museums and a range of alternative education settings. This blog explores the Manchester Hospital School setting. Read on to hear how their involvement in Great Science Share for Schools 2024 exemplifies inclusion at its finest.
Over to Brendan Fox, Lead Practitioner for Science at Manchester Hospital School.
At Manchester Hospital School we were extremely pleased to be invited to participate in the Great Science Share for Schools. As a school we value science highly and pride ourselves on making science practical and engaging for our pupils. We place huge importance on asking scientific questions, investigating and sharing which is at the heart of GSSfS.
Manchester Hospital School supports pupils from Greater Manchester who are not able to access their usual educational setting due to a variety of health needs. We teach pupils from early years through to 18. This can include teaching pupils by the bedside, teaching in the classroom, and teaching in the home. We are registered as a special school but our schools are microcosms of society and we support pupils with significant learning needs as well as those who attend mainstream education.
As part of our celebration of the Great Science Share we are running a series of science investigations so that all pupils can participate in explorative science that focuses on asking scientific questions to consider how changing variables can affect outcomes and allow development of scientific ideas.
Our goal is to make science accessible to all. We aim to bring practical science to pupils who otherwise might miss out on the experience.
The impact of the work can range from lightbulb ‘eureka’ moments of discovery, to a smile on a face that’s experiencing the joy of making things happen.
Thank you ‘Great Science Share’ for helping us bring the magic of science to the pupils at Manchester Hospital School
